About City
Alicante is a port city on the Mediterranean coast, with more than 3,000 years of history. During the 20th century the city had a boost with the creation of new neighborhoods and the arrival of the railway. Alicante is currently the second largest city and one of the most visited destinations within the Valencian Community. The port of Alicante was built in the 7th century, under the title of port of Castilla, becoming the maritime trade link between Castilla and the Mediterranean. The city has a historic district famous for its narrow streets hosting houses with colourful facades. Within this district you can visit Plaza Quijano, one of the oldest squares in the city, and Plaza de San Roque. The city serves as the headquarters of the European Union's Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market and a sizeable population of European public workers live there. The campus of the University of Alicante lies in San Vicente del Raspeig, bordering the city of Alicante to the north. More than 27,000 students attend the University.Since 2005 Ciudad de la Luz, one of the largest film studios in Europe, has had its base in Alicante.
